Mental Health While traveling

So yes.. I have been diagnosed with general anxiety and depression disorder. Supposedly, this has been going on ever since I was a little girl. I use to worry about every little thing possible. But the severe depression and anxiety started more recently, like this past summer. I’m not going to get into a lot of details but I was sexually harassed at my job and my life took a complete 180. I was scared to leave my house, let alone my bed. I was scared someone was going to touch me inappropriately again. I was embarrassed and ashamed of myself and thought that I did something to make this happen to me. I know now that isn’t the case..

However, one thing saved me. And that one thing was travel. And adventure. Traveling made me go out of my comfort zone. It allowed for me to try new things and make me come out of my shell again. Traveling got me to meet new people and when I was put in a new setting it got me to talk again. Be able to use my voice and be heard and have normal conversations again.

It’s kind of strange. The one thing that saved me for spiraling down a deep hole was getting up and going. Going where ever my mind took me. My trip to Mexico this past summer had me worried. I was afraid of getting on the plane, I was afraid of the people I might encounter, I was afraid that the one thing I loved most in the world was taken away from me. That wasn’t the case at all. When I went back in the airport for the first time after my situation everything fell back into place. I felt a sort of ease that I haven’t felt in a long time. Like I said in my previous posts, the people I met were beyond amazing. They were the most genuine people. They were kind and watched out for me. I felt like someone finally cared. And while I was on that trip, I felt nothing. No depression. No anxiety. No bad thoughts. No worry wort Payton anymore. It was an incredible feeling.

I believe that travel benefits a person’s mental health. You become your true self and you get to enhance your personality. You get more than just a happy feeling. The excitement and feelings you get during and after your trip aren’t just all. You get that feeling before, you know that you are going to be traveling soon and it gives you that added push to get through tough situations. I think the best thing about travel is it gets you to make and create strong relationships. Traveling puts you in those situations to enhance not only yourself but other’s around you as well. Having people around for you to get through tough situations while traveling will make dealing with situations back in reality, easier.

Why do people live in the desert?

I have never been to a desert. I have seen them in movies and on T.V. and I’m not going to lie… I don’t see what’s so great about them? It’s basically a flat land and it seems like there is nothing for miles and miles. There is usually a lot of sand and hills and I’m pretty sure the desert is extremely humid. Let me tell you, I hate humidity. It not only makes my hair frizz but it feels sticky and you sweat, like a lot a lot.

This is literally my hair when I step outside with humidity in Iowa… can’t imagine what it would be like if I lived in the desert like Arizona or Texas.

I don’t see the benefits of living in the desert.

– The land is undeveloped. – The climate is warmer. – Medical conditions such as allergies and respirator ailments are relieve. – The job market is less competitive. – Housing costs are lower. – An urban metropolis is nowhere in sight. – The scenery is desolate and beautiful.

A leading publisher says that there are numerous reasons for why a person should live in the desert. But to me, these don’t seem like good reasons. I mean they do, but not strong enough reasons for me to choose to live in the desert. Yes, the climate is warmer but like I said, the desert is extremely humid. I don’t know if I could do day in and day out with constant humidity. I truly don’t think I would be happy. I get grumpy and irritable when it’s humid out. Let’s also talk about how dangerous it can be if it gets too humid. A lot of children, pets, and elderly can’t go outside because of the harsh conditions? So why would anyone want to live where they have to be stuck inside all day. All the things listed above can be found anywhere, and the scenery isn’t beautiful in my opinion… it’s flat and dry?

Overall, I think the main reason why people choose to live in the desert is because it is less crowded and their roots dig back to their ancestors living in the desert. If you aren’t a city person the desert will probably be the place for you. In LA for example, there are buildings are almost touching each other and there isn’t a lot of room.

Researchers have found that humidity in the desert can reach a low enough point making the levels easier to prevent diseases specifically lung disease.

I may risk my health to live somewhere that isn’t so humid. I’m not the kind of girl that enjoys feeling like I just took a shower all day. I think I’m going to just take vacations to the desert because I know I won’t have to stay for long. And let’s be real… the views are pretty breathtaking.

Apple Vacations

If you haven’t heard of Apple Vacations you are honestly missing out. This site will help you throughout you’re entire vacation experience. Apple Vacations is the #1 tour operator throughout the world and it is used by people in all different kinds of countries. This website is basically you’re online trip organizer.

I apologize for the lack of accessibly to this picture. I am on my schools computer and it’s a chrome book so obviously I shouldn’t have expected to get a high quality photo.

But Apple Vacations makes it so easy for the traveler, they basically have everywhere in the world on this site so you have a wide range of options of where you would like to go. My family and I have benefited so much by using Apple Vacations and planning our trips to Mexico through this site. If, you would like you could get set up with an apple representative in your city/state and they can basically do everything for you. Kathy, our trip adviser here in Iowa City is amazing. We called her telling her we would like to go to Mexico in the month of December and she did her magic. She played around with dates and different locations to fly in and out of and ended up finding the cheapest deal for us. There are so many hotels in Mexico, obviously. But, Apple Vacations is so nice and they have lots of options to choose from like the ‘Rivera Maya’, ‘Cancun’, ‘Cabo’, ‘Puerto Vallarta’, etc. And within those different places in Mexico you get the option of choosing between HUNDREDS of hotels. There are all-inclusive hotels and then there are some where it only allows a place for lodging.

P.S. look for the golden apples! Those are typically the best hotels with the highest rating!

Apple Vacations allows for guests to comfortably enjoy their vacation because everything gets taken care of. You don’t have to worry about anything. A vacation package comes with; airfare, lodging, transportation, and unlimited food and drinks. All for a considerably decent price.

I think the best part about it all is once you get off a plane there are apple guys all over the place in colorful Hawaiian flowered shirts and they are more then helpful. They also have apple representatives at your hotel in case anything goes wrong. They tell the guests what time they need to be in the lobby for checkout and they help with any excursions you might like to do while on your vacation. These guys are so helpful and will do anything to make sure you have a great time.

I would highly highly recommended using Apple Vacations to book your next trip. I promise you, you won’t regret it.

(Also, there are SO many places to go while using Apple… I just used Mexico as an example since I have had an experience with it)

Happy Booking!! 🙂

Planning Lodging for a Tropical Vacation

So, I want to tell you guys about some good ideas for going on a tropical vacation. Since, if many of you read my blogs you know that the tropical route is my cup of tea.

I mean, planning a vacation is tricky and there a lot of things you need to do before you can just hop on a plane and take off. There is the airfare, transportation, food, lodging, etc. I think one of the most stressful parts is figuring out where to stay and what a good bang for buck would be.

I am a huge advocate of all-inclusive hotels! Trust me, they will honestly change your life. You get the best of the best where ever you go. However, everything is already paid for in advance. Food, lodging, airfare, transportation, etc! You get all you can eat food and drinks 24/7 because it’s free…. well… technically you paid for it. Let me tell you, it is a weird feeling eating at a restaurant and getting up and leaving without paying or leaving a tip. It makes your vacation a lot more enjoyable and laid back because you don’t need to worry about money and how much to save for the rest of your trip. All-inclusive resorts are extremely affordable as well! When we went to Mexico for a week it was $1,200 a person… and when you really think about it, it is a great deal.

All-inclusive resorts are honestly the best. I mean look at that! You get gorgeous views, unlimited access to the pools and beaches, and you’re basically stuck on your very own tropical island. It really doesn’t get much better then this. Don’t even get me started on all the accommodations that come with an all-inclusive resort.

Another way to go is renting a home or condo through someone at your destination. There are a lot of great apps and websites like AirBnb, VRBO, and many more! I have never done this before so I can’t talk much about it but I think they would be great. I’m not sure if I would like them parse because I like having people to interact with and having things to do and I think you would be very limited at a vacation rental. However, they would be very spacious and nice for a big group of vacationers.

My Tattoos

Tattoos seem to be a big controversy. My mom has two and she still has to hide them when we see her because my grandma grew up in a time where tattoos where considered a taboo. My mom did too, she almost felt guilty getting them because she grew up being taught that they were wrong. However, now a days, tattoos are a way of expressing yourself. They are art.

When I left Mexico, I realized that I am in love with this country and it was now apart of me. When I was there I didn’t feel anxious or depressed; I felt bliss. Pure happiness.  At the time I was 18 and I knew what I needed to do. I needed to get a tattoo of something resembling Mexico. I needed it because that place is my home and I needed something to remind me of it everyday. A picture of the beach as my phone background is nice but I needed something permanent.

I got Puerto Morelos coordinates on my wrist so if I ever start to feel anxious or depressed I can always look down at my wrist or rub those coordinates and get back to having peace with myself again. It’s stupid I know but that tattoo means more to me then many people know. It has meaning and it helps me get through tough situations. That is why I love tattoos because everyone’s tattoo has a different meaning to them. And you may never know what it means, but to them it might save them.

So, here is my first tattoo.

20.8478 degrees N & 86.8755 degrees W… the place that saved me.

If any of you have a tattoo you know that they become very addicting. Once you get one you start to think about the next one you want to get. The pain from the needle is exciting and the adrenaline from getting a tattoo is exciting. So, I told myself that if you want another tattoo then that’s your choice and it’s your body so go for it!

And then…. this happened 🙂

sorry about my ugly foot 🙂

But, I got this tattoo because the sun and the water are my happiness. Particularly, the sun and the water in Mexico. However, this has meaning to me as well and I absolutely love this one. These are my two favorite things mixed into one and I don’t think anything is more cooler than that!!

Tattoos are great, they are a way for a person to express themselves without having to explain it to anyone else. Celebrity Justin Bieber has numerous tattoos and he gets judged in the public eye every day for them. If you took the time to hear what his tattoos really mean then people would understand that he didn’t just get them for the heck of it. His tattoos help HIM get through rough situations as well.

The Best Beaches

Who doesn’t love the beach? Sandy toes, warm salty waters, and the hot sun beating down on your innocent and pure skin. I think I belong on the beach… it is the only thing that brings me pure bliss. I mean, some people like the mountains or the desert. But I on the other hand, the beach is my happy place. Nothing will ever compare to the beach.

I have only been to a few “beaches”. I put beaches in quotes because I am sure they aren’t really beaches. I mean… I’m from Iowa people. There are no beaches near us so we make do with what we can.

I love lists so lets see…

-“The Res” in Iowa City

-Lake McBride in Iowa City

-Lake Michigan in Wisconsin

-Clark’s Lake in Wisconsin

-Pacific Ocean while in Mexico

And…. that’s about it. So as you can see I am dying to find new beaches to explore and fall in love with.

If you really think about it though, there are SOOO many beaches in the world! Like literally all over the world…

So here are the top 25 most beautiful beaches in the world. I definitely didn’t think that South Africa would have pretty beaches because I associate Africa with the jungle, ya feel?

My dream is to go to the Maldives just to see their beaches. I have seen so many pictures on Twitter and Facebook of the Maldives and it is absolutely stunning…. I am not going to lie I have no idea where the Maldives is located on a map so that just shows that I need to explore the world and visit these gorgeous places.

The beach is calling and I must go… bye for now!

Where It All Started

My love for travel happened at a young age.. it’s kind of an odd story actually so I thought I should write about it.

Growing up, a lot of my peers went on marvelous and crazy trips. From London, England to Los Angeles, California. While I on the other hand went to a little and very unknown place called Door County, Wisconsin. Maybe you guys have heard of it but a lot of you probably have not. It is in the northern tip of Wisconsin where it breaks off.

I have gone to Door County every summer since I was maybe 3. I grew up riding in a car for 8 hours and passing through dinky and sketchy cities. I grew up on the lake and with no wifi nor T.V. on vacation. I grew up with no chain restaurants and no name brand shops. I had the “Blue Ox”, “Al’ Johnson’s”, and “Not Licked Yet” to eat at. And, “Harbor Wear”, “Nan & Jerry’s”, and “The Irish House” to shop at. My trips were very different than my friends growing up. I spent my week of vacation in a tiny tiny cabin on Lake Michigan. Yes, that sounds very nice. Our very own cabin but I didn’t get the luxury of going out out to the ocean or dress up all fancy for dinner because this was an old fashion vacation and it didn’t have the modern conveniences. I was following the traditions of my mom and my grandma and my great grandma. My grandma and grandpa went to Door County every year for 47 years.

I would say going to Door County made me more modest and humble because they didn’t offer the most prestigious of things. And, I was okay with that. In 2017, they are building a Jimmy Johns in one of the local towns and none of the townspeople nor vacationers who visit there frequently, agree with that. For me, Door County is a place where there are no chains and you get to take in the beauty of nature, the locals, and the culture of this place that no one has heard about. This is where my love for travel all started though. Passing through cities that no one has ever been to. Eating junk food and stopping at a “Pick and Save” to find the cheapest of snacks. (well known store in Wisconsin). And, Door County will always have a special place in my heart. As I get older however, I am ready to go experience bigger and better things and I am ready to start finding myself through travel.
